I had an aggressive recurrent pterygium in my right eye. I conducted extensive research on the internet and received second and third opinions from various doctors to determine my treatment options. From my research, I became alerted to the industry leading expertise of Dr. Gulani and his method to remove pterygiums.

This unique procedure removes the entire pterygium and utilizes an amniotic membrane graft. I was eager to meet with Dr. Gulani; however I live in San Diego, CA and would have to travel a good distance to Jacksonville for the procedure.

I was born legally blind, and I have worn glasses, and or contact lens for more than forty years. I have never had very good vision even with glasses and contact lenses. I have been seen at four eye hospitals in Tennessee, and I must admit they are considered to be good eye clinics. However, my eye condition was so unusual, and compounded by extreme astigmatism, that all of the eye surgeons advised me, that I could loose a line of vision, and that could be catastrophic for me.

A good friend of mine who lives in Jacksonville, Florida had LASIK surgery, and it was very successful. She knew of my eye condition, and informed me of her Lasik surgeon, Dr. Gulani. I immediately faxed my eye records to him. Dr. Gulani reviewed my records, and called me to explain my options pending an exam. Within a few days I was in his clinic. I went through two days of eyes exams, and counseling.

On December the eight Dr. Gulani performed Advanced Surface Ablation Laser surgery on both eyes. On December the 9th I could see better than 20/40, and still improving. I can also read without reading glasses. Something that I did not expect. This is the best vision that I have ever had. REMEMBER, I was not only extremely legally blind but also never correctable to better than 20/40 in both eyes. I am already seeing better than I ever did with my glasses and contact lenses and my vision is still improving.

I think my friend for introducing me to Dr. Gulani. Dr. Gulani has given me hope for my youngest daughter (who is as badly affected as I am), and a better way of life.

I was legally blind for almost 7 years after a failed cataract surgery and another unsuccessful surgery to re-attach my retina. I lost my confidence in business and suffered extremely in my career because of very poor vision and even lost couple of businesses. When asked why I chose Dr. Gulani to perform the LASIK procedure on me, my answer is "I saw first hand what "LASIK deals" really means for accuracy. My uncle decided to shop around for LASIK deals and found a center out of Atlanta offering $599 per eye, he took the bait. After the procedure he told me that his vision was 20/80 in one eye, and even worse in the other. He said that his eyes burned and itched, and said it felt like he had sand in his eyes. My vision problems included problems with distance and reading of small print. I had glasses for driving as well as reading. My passion is golf and my vision problems were very inconvenient on the course. Having to wear glasses while playing golf was a real headache. I can't help but get emotional when I speak of Dr. Gulani.

I had previously been to numerous noted surgeons and was told that due to the severity of my eye problems, it was just too risky to perform Lasik on my eyes. I would have to except being legally blind in both eyes with severe astigmatism and double vision.

As each year came and went by my frustration grew not only because my eyesight worsened but because I became increasingly vulnerable. Without my glasses, I was helpless. I never was without both a spare pair of regular glasses and sunglasses. At the cost of $600 a pair, replacing them was a real hardship.

I have been a prisoner of eyeglasses since the 4th grade and then I graduated to contact lenses. Since then, it has been a continuing battle with eye irritations; but because of vanity, I continued to wear my contact lenses.

My vision was extremely bad. I could not function normally without my eyeglasses or contact lenses. On a personal level, I have had so many embarrassing moments wherein an acquaintance would wave from a distance and I could not acknowledge, as I am not able to see from a distance. I have been called a snob because of this. Since I had my surgery last Jan., 27 th, this has stopped and has been changed to "do you see me now?"

Prior to the surgery, I could not even see the TV at the foot of my bed without my eye glasses on. I could not even recognize my family from a distance. I could not even go shopping for my wardrobe alone. I could not drive without my lenses and could not drive at night even with my lenses on. At work, I am faced with voluminous documents that need to be accurately computer entered. I am among the front-liners when citizen walked into the agency.

When I could no longer endure the discomfort of wearing contact lenses, I explored the possibility of lasik surgery. I visited and consulted a total of 3-lasik surgeon. When I walked into Dr. Arun Gulani's office, I had the feeling that I was in the right place. As soon as I spoke to Dr. Gulani, I knew I was going to entrust my eyesight to him. I felt very comfortable the moment I met him.

At the initial consultation, he took time to listen to me. He was encouraging me to ask questions. I vividly remember his word before we parted "we will not do the surgery unless all your questions are answered". To me, this is indicative that his primary concern is for his patients. Post surgery visits did not differ. Dr. Gulani has remained very thorough and very caring.

Now the visions on both my eyes have been corrected. I am now a proud peacock. Dr. Gulani has given me a new lease on my life. I can now appreciate everything around me. I even gained confidence in driving because I could see very well.

I had corneal scar in my left eye with blurred vision most of the time and had been advised a corneal transplant as the only solution.

I have recently completed a highly- successful procedure know as advanced surface ablation with chemical modulation through the Gulani Vision Institute in Jacksonville, FL. The circumstances are unique, and are indicative of the expertise of Dr. Gulani. In the year 2000, I had LASIK surgery on both of my eyes, correcting my vision from worse than 20-4000 to 20-20 vision. The surgery required two applications to each eye, leaving me with a cornea with two surgical incisions. In April 2003 I was diagnosed with multiple myelona cancer, which required some rather debilitating chemotherapy. The side effects of this chemotherapy caused significant changes to my eye. I lost my 20-20 vision, acquired double vision, and had cataract developed in both eyes. After the chemotherapy was over, I had the cataract removed and artificial lenses implanted, thus introducing a third surgical scar to my cornea. Unfortunately, the new lenses did not bring my eyesight back to 20-20.

At this point, my ophthalmologist fitted me for glasses, which I found exceedingly bothersome. I then asked what else could be done. At that point I was referred to Dr. Gulani, whom my ophthalmologist described as "the only ophthalmologist with the background, training, experience and equipment to apply any further treatment". Dr. Gulani examined me, and saw the extreme difficulty of having to determine what the initial Lasik surgery had done to the cornea of my eyes, take into account the artificial lens implant, as well as the three surgical scars on each eye. Dr. Gulani took on this most complex problem, and was miraculously able to restore my sight to 20-20 vision.

From this experience, I cannot recommend too strongly that the Gulani Vision Institute and Dr. Gulani be consulted on any vision problems that one might have. This is especially true if one has unsuccessful or marginally successful Lssik surgery in the past. Dr. Gulani is uniquely qualified to correct such situations that others would view as hopeless.

Before visiting Dr. Gulani, I suffered from severe myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism. As an active student and runner, I was unable to live my life with the freedom and convenience I desired. Due to the fact that contacts were not the answer because of the shape of my cornea I was forced to wear glasses at all times under all circumstances. This was not conducive for someone who is always involved in the world of sports and especially marathon training.

For most of my adult life I have been seen by The Washington Eye Physicians and Surgeons in Bethesda, Maryland.
It's amazing how things come together and how compassionate doctors will network to provide a level excellence for their patients. I was fortunate to meet with such an eye doctor who strongly recommended that I see Dr. Gulani. He told me that Dr. Gulani was the most advanced cornea specialist that he knew and that his knowledge and techniques were cutting edge. I left that appointment with new hope and impressed that Dr. Gulani was held in such high esteem by another doctor. I called that day to make an appointment and made travel plans to get to Jacksonville Florida and The Gulani Vision Institute.
I met with Dr. Arun Gulani in February of 2007 and experienced the most thorough eye exam of my life. It was clear to me that he had a passion for his work, straight forward and yet kind and compassionate, professional in every sense of the word. He was 100% present as I discussed my eye history with him. During this eye exam he discovered a hole in my left eye that had been undetected by my glaucoma specialist. He explained to me that it was a serious condition and needed immediate attention. Once this crisis was resolved he would see me again to go forward with the removal of the calcium covering the right eye. He took the extra effort to speak to my glaucoma specialist about his findings. I felt he really cared for me. His attention to details far exceeded my expectation.
With the crisis in my left eye resolved, I came back to Jacksonville for a pre-op appointment with Dr. Gulani. His staff greeted me with a friendly demeanor, remembering me from my previous visit several months earlier. In a large practice setting no one seems to remember who you are. Dr. Gulani has his finger on the pulse of his office and his presence is overwhelming and unique. "Donna, ask me as many questions as you would like about the surgery." was his statement as we went over the details of my scheduled eye surgery. My diagnosis was Pterygium of the right eye. The procedure: Lamellar Keratectomy with reconstruction. He gave me all the time I needed to get a full picture of what I could expect the day of the surgery and the post-op recovery, encouraging me to call if I had any other questions.

The day of my surgery [September 25, 2007] at the surgical center went smoothly. The nursing staff was efficient and very friendly, communicating each step. I was calm and felt reassured that I was in competent hands. The warm blankets were a soothing touch. Dr. Gulani reassured me and the next thing I remember was waking fully and Dr. Gulani saying that the surgery had gone perfectly. I would go to my son's home and see Dr. Gulani the following day. Dr. Gulani called me later that evening to ask how I was feeling, another example of his personal touch.
Several weeks have passed and my eye has healed completely. My eye is significantly more open. It looks healthy and feels amazing!

I first visited Dr. Gulani in the summer of 2007. I was 63 at the time. I had previously had LASIK surgery in one eye for distance vision about ten years earlier. The other eye was for near vision. My vision was unstable and my right eye was constantly irritated and red. It always felt like a grain of sand was embedded in it. I had prescription lenses which enabled me to see, but not clearly, and I was constantly putting them on and taking them off. This condition was the result of scarring from a RKeratotomy (RK) procedure years ago with another eye surgeon. My eyes were very strained trying to see and to work on a computer with a lot of reading and editing involved.

I was very impressed with the total experience at GVI. The office staff was polite and I was immediately made to feel comfortable. The exams were conducted with the least discomfort possible. I was never made to wait for my appointments and was treated with respect. It was obvious from my first appointment that this is where I needed to be to get the help I needed. In some of the other offices, I never even meet the doctor. Dr Gulani had no problem taking the time to explain and answer any and all questions I had on several occasions. I even went to doctors on Orlando thinking I would maybe get a better quality doctor in a bigger city. I was willing to travel if I was going to get better end results. Most of the other doctors only offered two different kinds of surgery. They then fit you into the type of surgery that they did. Then if you wanted "custom" or "HD" the other doctors wanted to charge you more. Everyone's eyes are different, so would all surgerys not be custom to your eyes?

Dr. Gulani on the other hand knows how to do more then thirty different kinds of procedures (To remove glasses and contact lenses) and therefore I really felt that he would truly be doing what was best for me and my eyes to give me the best possible out come. I did not want to be part of a cookie cutter program, and wanted a more personalized experience. No other doctor was willing to give me his personal cell phone number to call him should I have any problems. If nothing else it gave you piece of mind.

When I first decide to go around and get opinions and interview doctors, Dr. Gulani was the first doctor I met with. He was shocked that I had not done all of this research before I came to educate myself. I figured there was nothing to research until I met with a couple of doctors and made sure I was a candidate. I was legally blind. I had worn glasses for 39 years. I had to have 3 different pairs, For distance with bifocals, sunglasses 1 pair for computer work. constantly switching. Also corneal abrasions were a problem.

At Gulani Vision Institute, the staff are friendly and very helpful. When I had an emergency they fot me in and Dr. Gulani took time to explain things to me.

I am a first year medical student at Florida State University College of Medicine. Being that I am a first year medical student.

I was extremely impressed by Dr. Gulani's personalized approach to teaching and treating patients. During my visit to the institute, I was subjected to a number of unique cases, all of which were intently explained and demonstrated to both myself and the patient. I believe that it is this patient-centered approach along with his cutting edge techniques which makes Dr. Gulani such a world-renowned physician.

Although I am not a practicing physician yet, I feel as though Dr. Gulani's mentorship on issues dealing with patient care or as he has termed "high touch" techniques are invaluable in any medical career. In a world where physician's face-time with patients is on an ever decreasing path, I watched as a world-renowned ophthalmologist took the time to explain to each patient their individual condition, his treatment plan for that condition, and any risks that might be associated with treatment.

It is amazing to see how patients respond to Dr. Gulani's Corneoplastique- Advanced Laser Vision techniques. The patient's vision was immediately corrected following surgery and in some cases there were no visible incisions or evidence of surgery, even to other ophthalmologists!

Dr. Gulani is a very personable physician whether it is speaking to a patient, teaching fellows, or interacting with his staff. His personality allows him to be approachable by students with little training or background in ophthalmology, like myself which I feel is key to the learning process. Prior to Dr. Gulani's Advanced Laser Vision surgery my vision could be described as nothing short of a complete disability. For several years leading up to my consultation and treatment at the Gulani Vision Institute I was constantly besieged with poor vision, both near and far, double vision, strained eyes, dry eyes, itchy eyes, and tired eyes all of which, as one could imagine, took a drastic toll on both my personal life and my legal practice.

In 2006, after consulting multiple doctors over the course of 5 years for my disabling vision, I was eventually diagnosed with a corneal disease called Keratoconus. Based on this diagnosis I was informed that there were three options available to me that would enhance my overall vision but each of which had their independent downfalls: gas permeable contacts lenses (often intolerable by its users), intacs (corrective in nature but imprecise), and a corneal transplant (invasive, possibility of rejection, long healing timeline, and not an option for someone at my age of 31). Unable to bear the pain of gas permeable contact lenses I spoke to several friends and acquaintances regarding my condition and the remaining options that I had.

As it turned out, a good friend of mine in the medical profession had recently been a patient of Dr. Gulani and she was astonished not only by this aptitude and professionalism, but equally in his willingness to discuss with her, at length, about my condition as she understood it.

At his invitation, and as a resident of Maryland, I contacted Dr. Gulani over the phone and we spoke in detail about the potential courses of action that may be available. While there are several reasons why I decided to see Dr. Gulani, first and foremost, I would have to say was his undeniable and equally insatiable desire to see that I received the absolute best vision correction available.

My experience with Dr. Gulani and his staff at the Gulani Vision Institute was and remains superb. Simply put, as a patient, I have never experienced such an inviting, professional, and courteous atmosphere as that which I have and continue to receive from Dr. Gulani and the Gulani Vision Institute.
